๐Ÿฆ  Meningitis Protection

Meningitis Can Kill in 24 Hours.
One Vaccine Can Prevent It.

Bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency โ€” children can go from healthy to critical within hours. The Meningococcal ACYW vaccine offers proven, long-lasting protection. We bring it to your home.

The Disease

What Is Meningococcal Meningitis?

Meningococcal meningitis is a bacterial infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It is caused by Neisseria meningitidis โ€” a bacterium that spreads through close contact, coughing, and shared spaces like classrooms, hostels, and public transport.

The disease progresses rapidly. Stiff neck, high fever, sensitivity to light, and a distinctive non-fading rash are warning signs โ€” but in the early hours, symptoms can look like ordinary flu. By the time it is clearly recognisable, critical organ damage may have already occurred.

Up to 10โ€“15% of cases are fatal, even with treatment. Survivors may be left with permanent hearing loss, limb amputations, or brain damage.

High-Risk Groups

Who Should Get Vaccinated

IAP does not recommend routine vaccination for all children. These are the groups where it is strongly indicated.

Asplenia (functional or anatomical)

Includes sickle cell disease. Significantly higher risk of severe meningococcal infection.

Complement deficiency or inhibitor therapy

Persistent complement deficiencies or treatment with eculizumab/ravulizumab markedly increase risk.

Children & adults with HIV

Reduced immunity raises both the risk and severity of meningococcal disease.

Haj & Umrah pilgrims

Saudi Arabia mandates a valid meningococcal vaccination certificate, issued at least 10 days before departure.

International travellers

Students going abroad, travellers to sub-Saharan Africa (meningitis belt), and high-risk destinations.

Outbreak contacts

Exposed individuals, close contacts of a confirmed case, or those in outbreak-declared settings.

โ€œMeningitis is one of the few diseases where the window between symptom onset and a life-threatening emergency is measured in hours. Parents often dismiss early symptoms as fever or flu. Vaccination is the only reliable protection โ€” and at Vaccine Panda, we make sure no child in Delhi misses it because of cost or inconvenience.โ€

Common Questions

Is the meningococcal vaccine recommended for all children in India?

No. According to IAP ACVIP, meningococcal vaccination is not recommended as a routine vaccine for all children in India. It is strongly recommended only for high-risk individuals โ€” those with asplenia, complement deficiencies, HIV, or those travelling to high-risk areas like Haj/Umrah or the African meningitis belt.

At what age can the meningitis vaccine be given?

For infants 9โ€“23 months at high risk: 2 doses of Menactra at least 3 months apart. For children 2 years and above: a single dose of MenACWY (Menactra or Menveo) is recommended. Age alone is not the trigger โ€” risk category drives the decision.

Is the meningitis vaccine mandatory for Haj and Umrah?

Yes. Saudi Arabia requires a valid meningococcal vaccination certificate for all pilgrims. The certificate must typically be issued at least 10 days before departure. We can provide the vaccine and a signed certificate at your home.

How many booster doses are needed?

Children who remain at high risk require booster doses every 5 years. If vaccinated before 7 years of age, the first booster is at 3 years, then every 5 years as long as the risk persists. Your paediatrician will determine your child's booster schedule.

What are the side effects?

Mild soreness at the injection site, low-grade fever, and fatigue for 1โ€“2 days are common. Serious reactions are extremely rare. Our nurse stays for 15โ€“20 minutes post-vaccination to monitor.
