What Is Shingles?
Shingles (herpes zoster) is caused by the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus — the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you have had chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in your nerve cells for decades. As you age, your immune system weakens and the virus can re-emerge.
Shingles typically appears as a painful, blistering rash on one side of the body or face. The pain can be severe — often described as burning or electric shock sensations — and can precede the rash by several days.
The most feared complication is post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) — persistent nerve pain lasting months or years after the rash heals. It affects up to 20% of shingles patients and can be resistant to standard pain treatment.

Who Should Get Shingrix
Adults 50 years and above
Primary recommendation. 2 doses, 2–6 months apart. Even if you have had shingles before — vaccination reduces recurrence.
Immunocompromised adults (18+)
Cancer patients, transplant recipients, those on immunosuppressants — higher risk, lower natural immunity. Discuss timing with your doctor.
Adults with diabetes or chronic illness
Diabetes and heart/kidney disease raise shingles risk and severity. Early vaccination advised.
Healthcare workers and caregivers

If I already had chickenpox, do I need the shingles vaccine?
Yes — in fact, having had chickenpox is precisely why you need it. The varicella zoster virus lies dormant in your nerve cells after chickenpox. As immunity wanes with age, the virus can reactivate as shingles. Shingrix rebuilds that immunity.
How many doses of Shingrix are needed?
Two doses, given 2–6 months apart. Both doses are required for full protection. Our team coordinates both visits and sends reminders.
Is Shingrix safe for older adults?
Yes. Shingrix is a non-live recombinant vaccine — it does not contain the live virus. It is safe for most adults including immunocompromised individuals. Side effects (arm soreness, fatigue for 1–2 days) are common and indicate an immune response.
Can I get Shingrix if I am already on medication?
Most medications do not interfere with Shingrix. However, some immunosuppressants may affect vaccine response. Discuss your medication list with our paediatrician before the visit — included at no extra cost.
What is post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN)?
